SIGLO XXI: Forging the Future of Latinos in a Time of Crisis

Fourth Biennial Conference of the Inter-University Program for Latino Research

February 23-25, 2012
City University of New York

CONFERENCE TITLE AND THEME - SIGLO XXI: Forging the Future of Latinos in a Time of Crisis

The IUPLR Fourth Biennial Siglo XXI Conference will encourage the exploration of current realignments stemming from the 2007-2008 global financial crisis, the U.S. economic downturn, and Great Recession that have been a factor in a restructuring of American life. What we are seeing as a shift in the social environment is leading to a new stratification, giving rise to extreme conservatism, increasing the national levels of unemployment and therefore, augmenting disparities in education, health and economic status. In light of these current conditions, the conference seeks to elucidate how U.S. Latinos are forging the future.

The 2012 Siglo XXI Conference will convene members of the IUPLR network of scholars and researchers, as well as faculty of other national institutions, to provide an assessment and look at current research on Latino education, health, politics, civic engagement, labor and economics, immigration, the arts, culture and society. Through dialogue and the sharing of new academic research and scholarship, the conference will explore issues affecting the fastest growing segment of the U.S. population.

The three-day conference will consist of plenary sessions, panel discussions, and workshops. The conference will feature the IUPLR Distinguish Lecture Luncheon and will present a special tribute to an individual to recognize his/her intellectual contributions in the field of Latino Studies.

Panel sessions will be 90 minutes in length with three presenters and a discussant with ample time for a Q&A period towards the end of each session. Each paper should be 20 minutes in length or 12-15 pages long.
