IUPLR Annual Workshop

The primary goal of the annual IUPLR Workshop is to prepare researchers, junior faculty, and advanced graduate students across the IUPLR network to use forthcoming Census data to answer research questions about ethnicity, ancestry, and race. Two important by-products of workshop participation are the ability to generate statistical profiles for multiple predefined geographical areas and to construct unique geographical areas for analysis.

2009 IUPLR Summer Workshop: July 13-15
The Inter-University Program for Latino Research is holding its eighth annual 3-day workshop on Latino health and obesity at the University of Notre Dame from July 13-15.

The 2009 IUPLR Summer Research Workshop will build on the success of last years' workshop and focus on skill building. The workshop is aimed at new researchers who are interested in building their professional networks by developing collaborative research proposals. The keynote speaker will be Dr. Robert Valdez, professor of family and community medicine and economics and executive director of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Center for Health Policy at the University of New Mexico.

The workshop goals are:

  1. To increase personal network of researchers interested in the field of Latino Health
  2. To facilitate the development of collaborative research proposals among participants.

Building on the knowledge of Latino health issues and methodologies gained on the first day, participants will team together to develop a research proposal. Participants will present their proposals to the team and prepare them for submission to a program officer at the funding institution targeted by the team. Workshop participants will receive technical assistance with quantitative and qualitative methods and feedback on the developed proposals.

To get the maximum benefit of this workshop, participants should come to the workshop with a specific research question they would like to develop into a working proposal that is related to an aspect of Latino health in which they are interested.

Who is Eligible to Attend the Workshop

We are primarily inviting young faculty to complete an application form and submit a 1–2 page resume for review by the IUPLR Workshop Committee. While the conference is oriented primarily toward faculty, we will also consider advanced graduate students at the dissertation stage. For such students we are also asking for a brief letter of support from their dissertation advisor.
